Osteoarthritis

Arthritis is a common condition that affects millions of people. It most often develops in adults over the age of 40 and is common in those over 65. However, it can occur in younger people and children. The most commonly affected joints are:

  • Hands

  • Spine

  • Knees

  • Hips

Common symptoms are:

  • Pain and stiffness - especially early morning stiffness

  • The joint becoming red and warm

  • Joint swelling

  • ‘Crepitus’ - creaking and cracking of the joints

Although pain is a common symptom, plenty of people have arthritic joints and do not have any pain.

There are many ways to manage osteoarthritis which your physiotherapist can help with. These include:

  • The most fundamental way to manage OA is an exercise programme to keep the joints and body strong and mobile.

  • Pacing of activity

  • Managing weight - especially for weight bearing joints (knee/hip).
